How to Get Your Business Mentioned in ChatGPT and Gemini: 5 Steps from Foundation to Revenue
AI tools name only a few local businesses. Here are the 5 steps to get your business mentioned in ChatGPT and Gemini, and how each step leads to more revenue.
By James Anderson · Updated · 9-minute read
The Short Answer
To get your business mentioned in ChatGPT and Gemini, give AI one clear, consistent story about your business everywhere AI looks. Complete your Google Business Profile, make your name, address and phone match on every site, build a website explaining each service and town in plain language, and earn fresh reviews and local mentions. Each step gives AI more reasons to name you, and each mention sends you a customer who already chose you.
Key Numbers at a Glance
45%
of consumers used AI tools to find local businesses in the past year, up from 6% the year before (BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey, 2026).
ChatGPT recommends about 1.2% of local business locations (SOCi Local Visibility Index, 2026, 350,000+ locations studied).
Business websites make up 58% of the sources ChatGPT Search cites for local searches. Business mentions make up 27%, and directories 15% (BrightLocal ChatGPT Search sources study).
Google connected Google Business Profiles to the Gemini app on June 10, 2026.
Google's AI-powered Ask Maps draws on more than 300 million places and reviews from more than 500 million contributors (Google, March 2026).
Why AI Search Matters to a Local Business Right Now
Picture a homeowner with water coming through the ceiling. Five years ago, she typed "roofer near me" and scrolled ten results. Today, more and more owners of homes like hers open ChatGPT or Gemini and ask, "Who's the best roofer near me with good reviews?"
She doesn't get ten results. She gets a short list, usually a handful of names with a reason next to each. Then she calls one.
Here's the hard part. The jump from 6% to 45% of consumers using AI for local searches happened in a single year, according to BrightLocal's 2026 survey. Yet SOCi's 2026 study found ChatGPT recommends roughly 1.2% of local business locations. Most businesses are missing from the answer entirely.
The flip side is good news. With so few businesses showing up, the owners who get the basics right now face less competition for a spot on the short list than for a spot on page one of Google.
How ChatGPT Decides Which Local Businesses to Mention
ChatGPT doesn't drive around town checking businesses. ChatGPT reads what's already published about you and repeats what the sources agree on.
BrightLocal studied 800 local searches in ChatGPT Search and logged the sources ChatGPT showed. The split:
- Business websites: 58%
- Business mentions on other sites: 27%
- Directories: 15%
Two lessons come out of those numbers.
First, your own website is the single biggest source ChatGPT pulls from for local searches. A thin website with a logo and a phone number gives ChatGPT almost nothing to quote.
Second, ChatGPT checks your details across sources. When your website, your directory listings and your mentions all show the same name, address, phone and services, AI has a solid story to repeat. When one old directory shows a different phone number, AI has a reason to doubt you, and doubt gets you skipped.
How Google Gemini Decides Which Local Businesses to Mention
Gemini lives inside the Google world, so Gemini starts from Google's own data. For a local business, the most important piece of Google data is your Google Business Profile.
Google has tied the two closer together over the past year. Gemini began showing local results with business photos, ratings and details pulled straight from Google Maps in December 2025. In March 2026, Google launched Ask Maps, a conversational search inside Maps built on Gemini. Then on June 10, 2026, Google connected Business Profiles directly to the Gemini app.
The practical meaning is simple. Your Google Business Profile is no longer a listing sitting on a map. Your profile is a data feed into the AI answering your customers' questions. An incomplete profile means an incomplete picture of your business inside Gemini.
The 5 Steps to Get Your Business Mentioned by AI
Each step below builds on the one before. Skip a step, and the steps after lose strength. Follow them in order, and each one pushes the next toward the same result: AI names you, customers call, revenue grows.
- 1
Complete Your Google Business Profile
What to do: Fill in every field Google offers. Pick the most accurate primary category. List each service on its own, using the words customers search ("water heater installation," not "plumbing"). Add the towns you serve. Set correct hours, including holiday and weekend hours. Upload recent photos of real jobs. Show your license. Post an update at least once a week.
Why this works: Gemini reads your profile directly, and Google uses the same profile for the local map results. A complete profile gives both one clear, trusted record of who you are and what you do.
What this leads to: Google and Gemini understand your business. Now the rest of the web has a reference point to match.

- 2
Make Your Business Info Match Everywhere
What to do: Search your business name, your current phone number and any old phone numbers. Find every place your business is listed: directories, review sites, social pages, chamber of commerce pages, old ads. Make the name, address, phone, hours and services identical everywhere. Close duplicate Google listings left behind after a move.
Why this works: AI tools cross-check details across sources. Agreement builds confidence. A mismatch, even one old number on one forgotten directory, plants doubt.
What this leads to: When ChatGPT or Gemini compares sources, the sources agree. Your business becomes a safe name to repeat.
- 3
Build a Website AI Reads and Quotes
What to do: Give every service its own page. Give every town you serve its own page. On each page, answer the questions customers ask out loud, in short, direct sentences. Add structured data (schema markup) for your business, your services and your frequently asked questions. Keep your name, address and phone on the site identical to your Google profile. Make the site load fast on a phone.
Why this works: Business websites make up 58% of ChatGPT's local sources in BrightLocal's study. AI tools pull answers from pages answering specific questions clearly. A page titled "Water Heater Installation in Springfield," with a plain answer to "How long does a water heater install take?", gives AI something exact to quote when a customer asks.
What this leads to: AI has a deep, trustworthy source about your business, not only a listing. You become the answer to specific questions, not only general ones.
This step is where most local businesses stall. A website built years ago as an online brochure rarely has service pages, town pages, question-and-answer sections or schema. We build websites for exactly this job. See how on our generative engine optimization services page.
- 4
Earn Proof on Other Sites
What to do: Ask every happy customer for a review, and make asking a habit, not a one-time push. Reply to every review, good and bad. Earn mentions on local sites: your chamber of commerce, local news, supplier "find an installer" pages, community sponsorships, trade association directories.
Why this works: Business mentions make up 27% of ChatGPT's local sources. Reviews and replies show both people and AI a real, active business with real customers. Recent reviews matter more than old ones, because a business with no reviews in a year looks like a business no longer working.
What this leads to: AI sees other people vouching for you. Your business moves from "listed" to "trusted."
- 5
Keep the Foundation Current
What to do: Update your profile when anything changes. Keep reviews coming in every month. Post on your Google profile weekly. Check your listings every quarter for drift. Add a new website page whenever you add a service or a town.
Why this works: AI tools favor sources showing current, active businesses. A profile and website left alone for a year slowly fall behind competitors who keep feeding new signals.
What this leads to: You stay on the short list instead of falling off after one good month.
How One Step Leads to Revenue
Here's the whole chain in one line:
Complete profile → matching info everywhere → a website AI quotes → proof from other people → AI names you → customers call already sure → more booked jobs → more revenue.
Notice the last few links. A customer who gets your name from an AI answer didn't scroll past nine competitors. AI already did the comparing for her. She calls ready to book. In one Seer Interactive case study, visitors arriving from ChatGPT converted at 15.9%, compared with 1.76% for Google organic traffic. One case study isn't a rule, but the logic holds: the shorter the list, the warmer the call.
And unlike bought leads, these calls come from a source you own. Turn off an ad, and the calls stop the same day. A strong profile and website keep working.
Common Mistakes Owners Make with AI Search
Starting with tricks instead of the foundation. Special files, hidden keywords and "AI hacks" won't fix a half-empty Google profile or a phone number mismatch. AI repeats what the whole web agrees on.
Treating the website and the profile as separate projects. When your website lists six services and your profile lists two, AI sees two different stories. Build the website from the profile, not beside the profile.
Listing one town. If your profile and website mention only your home town, AI has little reason to name you for the towns next door you drive to every week.
Ignoring old listings. The directory you signed up for in 2017 still exists. AI still reads the old phone number.
Buying reviews or offering rewards for reviews. Google treats reviews tied to payment as a policy problem. Ask honestly, reply to everyone, and let the reviews come.
How to Check Whether AI Mentions Your Business
There's no reliable AI rank tracker yet. Check by hand once a month.
- 1Write down five to ten questions your customers ask, such as "best roofer in [your town]" or "who installs Christmas lights near [your town]."
- 2Ask each question in ChatGPT, in Gemini, and in Google's AI Mode.
- 3Note whether your business appears, where in the list, and what AI says about you.
- 4Check whether the details AI repeats are correct. A wrong phone number in an AI answer points back to a wrong listing somewhere.
- 5Add "AI tool" as an option in your "How did you hear about us?" question, so you see the calls AI sends.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get my business mentioned in ChatGPT?
Give ChatGPT one consistent story about your business. Complete your Google Business Profile, match your name, address and phone on every site, build a website with a page for each service and town, and earn fresh reviews and local mentions. Business websites make up 58% of ChatGPT's local sources, so your website matters most.
How does Google Gemini choose local businesses?
Gemini draws on Google Maps and Google Business Profile data, including categories, services, photos, reviews and hours. Google connected Business Profiles to the Gemini app in June 2026, so a complete, accurate profile is the first step.
Is my Google Business Profile or my website more important for AI search?
Both, in order. Start with the profile, because Gemini reads the profile first and the rest of the web should match the profile. Then build the website, because ChatGPT cites business websites more than any other local source.
How long does getting mentioned by AI take?
AI tools refresh on their own schedules. Profile fixes and listing cleanup tend to show up first. Website content, reviews and mentions build over several months. Consistency over time beats a single big push.
Do I need to pay for ads to show up in ChatGPT?
No. AI recommendations for local businesses come from your profile, your website, your reviews and mentions on other sites. None of those require an ad budget.
Will anyone guarantee my business appears in AI answers?
No. Nobody controls what AI tools say. Anyone promising a guaranteed spot is overselling. What you control is the foundation: give AI the most complete, consistent, current story about your business, and you give AI the most reasons to name you.
What's the first step I should take today?
Grade your Google Business Profile. The free 10-point grade takes about 90 seconds and shows what's helping and hurting.
Start with the Foundation
AI search rewards the same thing good customers do: a business with a clear story, told the same way everywhere, backed by real proof. Get the foundation right, and every step after gets easier.
